Head and Neck Reconstruction

Conveniently located to serve the areas of Honolulu, HI

Head and neck reconstruction restores form and function after surgical removal of cancerous tissue in areas such as the face, scalp, oral cavity, jaw, throat, or neck. These procedures address both aesthetic appearance and critical functions like speech, swallowing, and breathing. Reconstruction is tailored to the size, location, and complexity of the defect, as well as the patient’s overall health and treatment plan, with the goal of achieving the most natural and functional outcome possible.

Pedicled Flaps

Pedicled flaps use tissue—skin, muscle, or bone—moved from a nearby region while keeping its original blood supply intact. These flaps are rotated or tunneled into the defect and are often used for smaller or moderately complex reconstructions. Advantages include shorter operative time and no need for microsurgical vessel connection.

Free Flaps

Free flap reconstruction involves transferring tissue from a distant site—such as the forearm, thigh, or fibula—along with its blood vessels, which are reconnected to vessels in the head or neck using microsurgery. Free flaps allow for highly customized restoration of both form and function, making them ideal for large or intricate defects. This approach can restore bone for jaw reconstruction, supple tissue for oral cavity lining, or skin coverage for facial contouring.

Both techniques may be combined with dental implants, prosthetics, or secondary refinements to optimize both appearance and functionality after cancer surgery.
